CASALFIUMANESE - Bologna
Guide to CASALFIUMANESE

Casalfiumanese is a town of 3,441 inhabitants in the province of Bologna, in the valley of the Santerno river.
Its origins are very ancient, dating back as far as the Bronze Age, as evidenced by findings dating from the 14th to the 10th century B.C.
Around the year 1000, a Castle called Castrum Casale was built on a small hill, thus in a very well-defensible position, and the medieval structure is still clearly recognizable today.
Given its position, its history has been linked to the territorial struggles between Bologna and Imola. After being conquered by Cesare Borgia, Casalfiumanese was part of the Papal States for a long period.
WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO

The Romanesque church of Rivera deserves a visit, the oldest building in the entire Santerno valley: it dates back to the 14th century; the remains of the castle and bell tower of the ancient church of Fiagnano and the Torre Pedriaghe, or Pieve di Sant'Andrea, with its 14-meter-high tower.
For those passionate about outdoor activities, the territory of Casalfiumanese is part of the Alta Via dei Parchi trail, a route that crosses Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, and Marche and allows you to discover the beauty of the Apennines with its breathtaking views and pristine nature (the route crosses two National Parks, five regional ones, and one interregional one). The trail is divided into 27 stages, for a total length of 500 kilometers, suitable for both experienced hikers and simple enthusiasts. There are also 10 cycling routes of varying difficulty in the area, called "Ciclovie dei Parchi," as well as one that circles around the Rio Casale valley, allowing you to pass through the badlands and enjoy magnificent panoramic views. The Parco Regionale della Vena del Gesso Romagnola also deserves a visit: in addition to a rich flora and fauna thanks to the particular microclimate of the area, there are ancient remains of human settlements from various epochs, such as the remains of the Rontana Castle, on the summit of Monte Rontana, dating back to 973, from which you can enjoy a magnificent view. However, the peculiarity of the Vena del Gesso is the great presence of caves, many of which are visitable: more than 200 have been discovered, for a total of over 40 kilometers.
EVENTS AND MANIFESTATIONS
Many events take place throughout the year in Casalfiumanese: on the Sunday closest to March 19th, the Raviolo Festival is held, an opportunity to taste sweet ravioli filled with jam and sweet liqueur, typical of the area, as well as parades of allegorical floats and shows; in San Martino in Pedriolo, the Spring Festival is held, with parades of allegorical floats and stalls selling carnival wines and sweets; in Sassoleone, a fraction of Casalfiumanese, the Cuccagna Festival is held on the first or second Sunday of April, with the Cuccagna tree at the center of the main square: all those who are brave enough have the opportunity to climb it to win the prize; at the end of June, the Apricot Festival takes place, a characteristic product of the Casale countryside; the last weekend of June and the first weekend of July, the Tortello Festival is held, a culinary event aimed at introducing this typical dish in all its variations, in broth or dry and with various types of filling.
