CIVIC MUSEUM OF THE MIDDLE AGES

The fifteenth-century Ghisilardi Palace (or Ghisilardi Fava) houses the Civic Medieval Museum of Bologna and is itself a work of art, featuring Renaissance architectural works, including some beautiful frescoes by the Carracci brothers. The museum presents important collections, including that of Marquis Cospi, with natural and artificial wonders, the Marsili collection, an important collection of ancient weapons, and the Palagi collection, dating back to 1860. The works, displayed across three floors of the palace, in addition to the collections, range from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century and document the medieval history of Bologna, starting with the high medieval artifacts from the seventh to the ninth centuries. Notable are the funerary monuments of the doctors of the “Studio,” glass and ivory, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures and bronzes, books and religious objects.
