MALALBERGO - Bologna
GUIDE TO MALALBERGO
Malalbergo is a municipality of 8,977 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its origins probably date back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the discovery of a settlement from that period.
It is interesting to note that Lucrezia Borgia passed through Malalbergo on her way to Ferrara for her third marriage.
WHAT TO SEE IN MALALBERGO
To visit is the Palazzo della Dogana, built in the late 1500s, which was the headquarters of the boat customs, serving as customs between the Este Duchy and the Papal State; it later became the headquarters of the Napoleonic Gendarmerie and the National Guard. The fact that it hosted soldiers for a long time earned Palazzo della Dogana the nickname Casermone.
Also interesting is the Chiesa di San’Antonio Abate, in Romanesque-Byzantine style reminiscent of the basilicas in Ravenna; inside you can see a painting by Massari, a Madonna and Child, and an altarpiece from the mid-18th century.
If you want to spend time outdoors, not far from Malalbergo is the floodplain forest of Bisana and Panfilia, a very vast area with a peculiar appearance: here, in fact, the river has created elevated flood terraces over the centuries formed by the deposition of debris such as sand and clay, which these lands are rich in, but it also includes wooded areas where you can find oaks and elms. Within the Bisana Forest, there is a diverse and rich ecosystem, allowing many species of animals to find shelter and an ideal habitat. The forest can be visited year-round, although the best periods are probably autumn and spring, and within it several paths have been created to allow visitors to admire the natural features found here and the animals that live here.
