MORDANO - Bologna
Guide and Hotels of MORDANO
Mordano is a town of 4,747 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. The first settlements date back to the Roman era, and it was the Romans who carried out the initial reclamation of the territory, as well as the construction of roads with a typical orthogonal grid and the leveling of the land. During the medieval period, Mordano was at the center of numerous battles between Imola and Bologna, and over the following centuries, it experienced many territorial and administrative changes until it became part of the Papal State.
WHAT TO SEE AND WHAT TO DO
You cannot miss the two towers located at the entrance of the ancient fortified village: they were built in the nineteenth century to replace the ancient access gate and have a faux medieval style rich in battlements reminiscent of the towers of the Arsenal in Venice.
A visit to the museum located inside the Sforza Tower is worthwhile; a magnificent building from the fifteenth century recently restored, where one can trace the history of the area, divided into five sections: historical-archaeological and historical-modern, covering history from antiquity to today; ethno-anthropological, where agricultural tools are on display; historical-testimonial; with audio and video testimonies of the more recent past; and the workshop of knowledge and flavors, where you can taste typical products.
Now the Motor Valley is an internationally recognized reality, a region of Emilia Romagna where the main manufacturers of cars and motorcycles are concentrated, known and sought after all over the world. On tourism websites, but also at www.motorvalley.com, you can find many vacation packages or activities related to the motor world, capable of satisfying enthusiasts of all kinds, from those who want to race on the track, perhaps even with their own vehicle, to those who are more interested in visiting the many museums and collections located in this area. Among the collections worth mentioning is the Battilani Collection, which is definitely worth a visit, given the proximity between Mordano and Imola, just a few kilometers away. Benito Battilani was somewhat of a pioneer in the collection of vintage motorcycles, now much more widespread, and he managed to gather some particularly rare and unique specimens, such as the 1924 Condor, equipped with a sidecar, or the Pennazio. The Collection allows one to relive the history of the motorcycle, from the first 'evolved bicycles' to more recent models.
EVENTS AND MANIFESTATIONS
Among the events that take place in Mordano throughout the year, we find Carnival, with parades of allegorical floats and master papier-mâché artisans gathering here from all over the region, in addition to the classic food and wine stands with traditional carnival sweets; at the end of May, there is the Agriculture Festival, an ancient celebration of peasant origins characterized by historical parades, exhibitions of period tools, and ancient crafts, culminating in the Palio dei Borghi, in which 10 jockeys compete in a horse race; in mid-June, there is the Palio del Torrione in Bubano, a historical-fantastic reenactment referencing the legendary presence of a dragon in the area and the historical presence of Caterina Sforza, who had a castle built here, now almost completely in ruins.
