PALLAVICINI PALACE

The Pallavicini Palace is a splendid Quattrocento Bolognese building, repeatedly retouched and rebuilt by its various owners: from Sala (1493) to Volta, Marsili, and then the Count Isolani, who in 1680 entrusted the task to architect Paolo Canali, who created the monumental staircase and the hall with a lantern ceiling, the tallest in the city alongside that of Palazzo Ranuzzi: in 1690 the rooms were splendidly decorated with paintings by Giovanni Antonio Burrini.
The palace was then the residence of Marshal Gian Luca Pallavicini (Genoa, 1697-1773), a condottiero and minister of the Habsburg Empire, who made it the seat of a European court, offering scenes of royal dignity to guests. Among them, fourteen-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed in a concert in the Burrini hall, festively lit, on the evening of March 26, 1770, attended by the Bolognese nobility and religious authorities. In the second half of the 1700s, his successor Giuseppe Pallavicini promoted a series of restorations and reconstructions with stucco decorations by G. Rossi on the walls of the great halls of the “Camerone” and “Conviti,” with candelabra à la grecque. From a pictorial point of view, various artists were involved, including the painters Filippo Pedrini, Serafino Barozzi, and Flaminio Minozzi, who decorated the cupola of the hall with a fresco.
Today the Palace is the site of museum exhibitions and events.
