PINACOTECA NAZIONALE

PINACOTECA DI BOLOGNA

art gallery of bologna

The National Picture Gallery of Bologna, which is housed in the former Jesuit novitiate of Sant'Ignazio, in the same historic building that houses the Academy of Fine Arts, was completely renovated at the end of the last century with a museum that offers visitors a journey through Emilian painting from the 13th to the 18th century.
The picture gallery was founded in 1808 as a collection of the Academy of Fine Arts and then became an independent museum in 1882.
The rooms feature works by Vitale, the Pseudo Jacopino, Simone dei Crocefissi, and Jacopo di Paolo, Giotto, and Lorenzo Veneziano, with one of the largest national collections of detached trecento frescoes.
For the Renaissance, there are paintings by the Vivarini, Cossa, and Costa, Perugino, Raphael, Parmigianino, and Titian.
The section dedicated to the 17th century offers rooms dedicated to the three Carracci and Guido Reni, Guercino, Domenichino, and Tiarini. The 18th century Emilian art is represented with works by Crespi, Creti, and Gandolfi.
The Cultural offer is completed by the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints, with thousands of examples, hosted on the upper floor.

BACCHUS AND ARIADNE BY GUIDO RENI
Unique Episodes AND New Proposals

BACCHUS AND ARRIANA

Thanks to the exhibition "Bacchus and Ariadne by Guido Reni. Singular Stories and New Proposals" curated by Andrea Emiliani and on display at the National Picture Gallery of Bologna (October 12 to November 15, 2018), the fascinating and complex story of the famous lost painting "Bacchus and Ariadne" by Guido Reni (1575-1642), one of the most important artists in the European art scene of the seventeenth century, is enriched with new pieces, intriguing details, and interesting perspectives for comparison.

curated by Andrea Emiliani
From October 12 to November 15, the Salone degli Incamminati of the National Picture Gallery of Bologna will host the exhibition curated by Andrea Emiliani, dedicated to the much celebrated yet unfortunate Wedding of Bacchus and Ariadne: an imposing masterpiece of Guido Reni’s late period, long thought destroyed, until the rediscovery of the Ariadne (Bologna, National Picture Gallery, deposit of the Foundation of Monte di Bologna and Ravenna). The large fragment, which appeared on the market at the beginning of the current century, suggests rather a dismemberment, revealing the possible background of the intricate story.
An important restitution to which it is now possible to add new arguments, on the occasion that sees for the first time in Bologna some painted copies of the lost original brought together.
These are the two Roman canvases from the National Gallery of Ancient Art in Palazzo Barberini and the Academy of San Luca, and the painting from the Montevideo (Uruguay) collection, recently attributed by Emiliani to Giovanni Battista Bolognini (1612-1688). Moreover, the exhibition will allow a comparison with the printed version realized by the same artist, the first graphic testimony of the painting.
The last of Guido’s “largest and most important” works thus reveals its formal identity, which owes as much to the prototype’s good fortune as to what is visible to us today.
