SAVIGNO - Bologna

Guide to SAVIGNO

Savigno is a village of 2,735 inhabitants in the province of Bologna.

As evidenced by the many artifacts found in the area, the territory of Savigno has been inhabited since ancient times, but the first stable settlements are certainly of Roman origin.

Being located at the border between the territories of the city of Modena and those of Bologna, Savigno has often found itself in the midst of bloody battles, passing from the control of Countess Matilda of Canossa to that of the city of Bologna, finally becoming part of the Papal State in 1500.

Today, SAVIGNO is a municipality of the new municipality of Valsamoggia, created from the merger of the previous municipalities of Bazzano, Crespellano, Monteveglio, Savigno itself, and Castello di Serravalle.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN SAVIGNO

Very interesting is the Church of San Matteo, in the center of the village, built in the 1700s, where the ancient Oratory of St. Matthew once stood. In front of the church, you can see the obelisk in memory of the riots of 1843, when patriots following Mazzini rebelled against Papal domination.
A few kilometers away from Savigno is the Regional Park of the Sassi di Roccamalatina, which extends for 2,300 hectares on the hills of the Middle Modenese Apennines, rich in chestnut groves and woods. Within it stand the sandstone peaks of the Sassi, imposing towers that often exceed 70 meters: their origin dates back to the Oligocene, when the entire area was actually a seafloor and underwater currents deposited heavier debris, forming imposing spire-shaped structures still visible today. The Park has more than one hundred kilometers of trails suitable for walking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, thanks to the presence of many riding schools in the area. The many trails offer a wide range of difficulties to choose from, from short ones suitable for a quiet walk, perhaps with family, to more challenging ones that require a higher level of hiking experience. In the Roccamalatina Park, there are also some via ferratas, satisfying climbing enthusiasts. It is worth reaching the Pieve di Trebbio, a magnificent Romanesque building dating back to the year one thousand; the church consists of three naves and has a crypt accessed by a hatch in the floor, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, depicted in a 17th-century painting. Outside the church, you can still admire a beautiful octagonal baptistery.

EVENTS AND MANIFESTATIONS

Various events take place throughout the year in Savigno: every second Sunday of the month, the Antique and Vintage Market is held, an opportunity for antique enthusiasts and those looking for great deals to stroll through one of the most well-known antique markets in the area. But Savigno is especially the city of truffles, and it is during the month of November that lovers of this delicacy can enjoy three weekends full of flavor: there are obviously tastings of typical dishes, but also street food, an opportunity to taste truffles prepared in unexpected ways; alongside all this, there are exhibitions, conferences, and even visits to truffle fields and nature walks, including night excursions, during which enthusiasts can truly experience the search and collection of truffles by following truffle hunters and their dogs.
