THE MUSEUM FOR MEMORY OF USTICA
THE USTICA MEMORIAL MUSEUM OF BOLOGNA

The wreckage of the passenger plane DC9 shot down on June 27, 1980, while flying towards Palermo airport is displayed in the suggestive and evocative frame that the French artist Christian Boltanski has created for the city of Bologna.
The 81 victims of the massacre are evoked with the same number of lights that turn on and off in the rhythm of human breathing in the Museum's ceiling.
81 black mirrors reflect instead the image of those who advance on the balcony where 81 speakers emit whispered phrases of general thoughts, to highlight chance and destiny in the tragedy.
Personal items belonging to the victims recovered during the recovery operations have been gathered in nine large black boxes around the wreckage of the DC9: Shoes, fins, mouthpieces, glasses, and clothes that would document the disappearance of a body remain sealed in the boxes, but photos of them have been republished on the "List of Personal Items Belonging to the Passengers of Flight IH 870," a publication available to each visitor for their own reconstruction of what happened.
A video projection presents footage and testimonies reported by news agencies and television news programs from the moment of the tragedy until the realization of the museum, as well as the documentary The French Missile produced by Canal Plus.
There are also computer stations to delve into the many mysteries surrounding this tragedy through audio–video documentation.
