CASTEL D'AIANO | Bologna
CASTEL D'AIANO Travel Guide
Castel d'Aiano is a village of 1,857 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its origins date back to Roman times, and it is thought that its name derives from the Roman family to whom this area had been granted. Its name was quoted for the first time in a document of 969, a period in which it belonged to the possessions of Countess Matilde of Canossa. Given its position, Castel d'Aiano was long disputed among the cities of Modena and Bologna, and therefore being periodically under the dominion of one city or the other; of the castle today there are very few traces, only parts of the walls and foundations. Very interesting is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, located in the center of the village, although it was rebuilt between 1959 and 1960, since it was completely destroyed during World War II.
