SAN BENEDETTO VAL DI SAMBRO Travel Guide
San Benedetto Val di Sambro is a village of 4.348 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its origin is very recent, the end of 1800, when the two municipalities of Pian del Voglio and Poggio dei Rossi were united, it is known that the territory has always been part of the possessions of the city of Bologna, which shared alternate vicissitudes.
what to see and what to do
Very close to San Benedetto, just 6 kilometers away, is the lake of Castel dell'Alpi, the only one in the province of Bologna to have natural origins: it was created by a landslide in 1951 that blocked the course of the Savena river. Unfortunately, this event has destroyed the ancient village of Castel dell'Alpi, sparing only the church; today the village has been rebuilt on the shore of the lake, becoming a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer. The lake is particularly suitable for sport fishing, both launching and towing, with the boat, depending on the area you choose; among the fish that have found their ideal habitat here, you can find carp, which can also reach a considerable weight, pike and tench.
The whole territory is crossed by many paths of varying difficulty, from those suitable for everyone to the most demanding, suitable for those who want to get away from the hustle of everyday life, and which can be traveled both on foot and by mountain bike. Among these it is particularly beautiful the path called Via degli Dei, reported by the CAI, which seems to be part of an ancient series of Roman roads that during the Middle Ages connected Bologna and Florence. Its name probably derives from the fact that it crosses places like Monte Adone, Monte Venere and Monte Luario, all places that recall the names of ancient characters and deities (Lua was the Roman goddess of atonement). Along its path you pass through ancient parishes and villages, such as Cedrecchia, Pian del Voglio, the medieval Galappio Tower, up to the tops of Monte Bastione, 1190 meters high and Monte dei Cucchi, 1140 meters high. However, there is another itinerary worth mentioning for its beauty: the one that leads to the many small rural villages that dot the slopes of the Bolognese Apennines. Beautiful and picturesque villages of Musolesi and Qualto, recently restored and dating back to the XV-XVI centuries. Probably however, the oldest building is located in Poggio Suizzano, and is a tower-house from the 1300s. Following what was once called the Via dei Mulini, along the rivers Sambro and Setta, you can still see about forty water mills , some hidden from the vegetation, but others clearly visible and still working.
EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS
Various events take place in San Benedetto, including the Feast of Saint Anthony, the first half of June, with food and wine stands and local crafts, theatre performances and live music, while at the end of October there is the Tartufesta , typical appointment with one of the most precious typical products of the Bolognese Apennines, the truffle! The event allows you to taste the truffle prepared in many different ways, even in the form of ice cream (it seems that it is also very good!).
