CASTEL GUELFO di BOLOGNA
CASTEL GUELFO di BOLOGNA Travel Guide
Castel Guelfo di Bologna is a village of 4.482 inhabitants in the province of Bologna.
Its name derives from Castrum Guelfum, Guelph fortification dating back to 1309, when a castle was built to defend the territory from the attacks of the nearby city of Imola, given its proximity to the latter.
Between 1400 and 1700 took shape the architectural structure of the village, with the castle in a raised position and the village with a classic rectangular shape, which has remained largely unaltered since then.
what to see and what to do: Malvezzi-Hercolani Palace - Battilani collection - Outlets
When you arrive at Castel Guelfo it seems almost to return to the Middle Ages: the old town is surrounded by the imposing defensive walls and the four corner towers. In the central square are Palazzo Malvezzi-Hercolani, which has a beautiful courtyard with two orders of porticoes and today is the town hall; the Palazzo del Podestà, characterized by a tower and a cloister of the 15th century, and the Cassero, the ancient gateway to the village, once the only access, to allow a more effective defense, and today a clock tower. In fact, in ancient times, in addition to the drawbridge that was lowered every morning, around the walls there was also a ditch full of water, to underline the purely military character of this village.
