MEDICINA | Bologna
MEDICINA Travel Guide
Medicina is a town of 16,878 inhabitants in the province of Bologna. Its name derives from the Latin, and means "place where you get medical, you heal". As shown by many archaeological finds, the area was already inhabited in the pre-Roman period. Given its position on the border between the Exarchate of Ravenna and Bologna, it has experienced alternating political events; it was part of the territories of the Countess Matilde di Canossa, then passed under the control of the Church until the Italy’s Unification.
what to see and what to do
Walking through Medicina you can admire the Palazzo Comunale, originally a convent of the Carmelites, which over the course of time has been extended and restored several times; the Clock Tower, built on a corner of the Palazzo del Podestà, with a majolica clock dial of the seventeenth century in Faenza, the only known example. Very interesting the Church of Carmine, of the 1600, inside which you can admire the beautiful paintings of the eighteenth century.
For those who love outdoor activities, the Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi and Calanchi dell'Abbadessa is the ideal place: here you can go hiking on the many paths to admire the strange landscape created by the chalk outcrops, the plateaus, the badlands, the cliffs and the valleys, besides the many caves, some of which can be visited. The various itineraries are viable on foot or by mountain bike, and are of various length, but in general they are suitable for everyone: to remember the Speleological excursion in the Cave of Spipola and the Calanchi dell'Abbadessa and Foiano.
Medicine, with its 20 kilometers that separates it from Imola, can be fully included within the territory of the Motor Valley, so well known by now because it hosts all the major car and motorcycle manufacturers, such as Ferrari and Lamborghini, just to name a few. As these places are linked to the world of motorsport, there are numerous holiday theme packages that can be found on the many dedicated websites, which allow you to organize test rides on sports cars in one of the many race tracks in the area (there are 5, in addition to 11 kartiodromes), but also sports driving courses. In addition to the numerous official and private collections, within the Motor Valley you can also find many museums that exhibit particularities related to the world of engines. Among these is the Museum od Idice River Valley, located in Budrio, close to Medicina.
