SAN LAZZARO DI SAVENA - Bologna
SAN LAZZARO DI SAVENA Travel Guide

San Lazzaro di Savena is a commune of Bologna historically built at the intersection between Via Emilia and the Savena river.
Its territory has been inhabited since ancient times by pre-Roman populations. Paleolithic sites, copper age and bronze age were found.
Starting from I-II century AD San Lazzaro di Savena was colonized by the Romans.
In the Middle Ages it became the feud of Matilde of Canossa and became famous for its leprosy. The latter was initially in the territory of Bologna but with the expansion of the city was moved further away and became a lazzaretto in Ronco Maruni.
Over time Ronco Maruni, because of the lazarus, changed his name and came to be called San Lazzaro.
Today San Lazzaro di Savena is a town of about thirty-two thousand inhabitants, rich in monuments and places of interest to visit and natural areas where you can go hiking and walking.
