PORRETTA TERME - the SPA

PORRETTA TERME Travel Guide

Located in the beautiful Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, Porretta Terme is part of the metropolitan city of Bologna. It is only 59 km from the provincial capital and is known for its thermal water benefits.

Since January 1, 2016, Porretta Terme has become a capital city in Alto Reno Terme, a new municipality created by the merger between the municipalities of Porretta Terme and Granaglione.
According to an ancient legend, during the Middle Ages a sick ox went to drink at its waters and was miraculously healed.

Since then the ox became the symbol of the municipality of Porretta Terme and its thermal waters have become famous throughout the world.

According to the archaeological sources, Porretta's thermal baths were already used in Roman times, long before the story told by the popular legend.
After a period of abandonment during the Middle Ages, around the twelfth century it began to take shape in the present inhabited center and begin to appear to be the first resort structures connected to thermal waters.

From then on, the reputation of the waters of Porretta Terme has been increasing ever since, to become, nowadays, one of the privileged tourist destinations for those who want to spend a relaxing and well-being.

The attractions

Today's inhabited area is dominated by the charming church of S. Maria Maddalena, dating back to the 17th century, in which are housed important works of art, such as the palace of the main altar created by Calvaert, a famous Flemish painter.

Ideal starting point to discover all the beauties of the Bolognese Apennine, Porretta Terme makes it easy to reach the well-known ski resort of Corno alle Scale, perfect for spending both winter and summer vacations.

Interesting is the guided visit to the underground springs of the Porretta thermal bath, which lasts for two hours (info: I.A.T. Alto Reno).

For those who prefer nature and trekking, the territory of Porretta Terme is ideal for relaxing walks in an unspoilt natural habitat.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Faggio (Beech)  -[see photo above] is immersed in a lush forest dating back to the 1700s. The shrine can be reached thanks to an impressive walk in the shade of beech trees and every year on July 26, hosts the traditional Feast in honor of Sant'Anna.
